Trivia Mintue Mentions: The Day Niagara Falls Stood Still

by

NiagaraFallsFrozenCan you imagine, Niagara Falls standing still? On March 29th thru March 31th, 1848 this beautiful phenomenon of nature did just that. An ice formation blocked the Niagara River at the entrance blocking the flow of water with with hundreds of thousands of tons of ice for about 40 hours. The residents around the falls woke on March 30th to not the roar of the falls but a silence, which they were not accustomed to.

All the factories and mills were shut down because of the still water, and about 5,000 people came out to see what happened to the falls. They were now able to walk, ride horses and explore the banks and Niagara River bed to discover artifacts of the War of 1812, tomahawks, guns, bayonets, muskets.

This also opened up an opportunity to use explosives to blast rocks below the falls that were a navigation hazard to the still in service today the Maid of the Mist tour boat. The Maid in the Mist started this service in 1846.

On the night of March 31st 1848, the wind shifted and the ice started to melt. Once again the water started flowing and has been ever since.

Try to stay away from anyone with the flu. I could take a few weeks before you will feel the symptoms from having  contact with someone with the flu.

Wash your hands often  and keep them away from your face. Carry an alcohol-based hand sanitizer and use when ever you come into contact with anyone, in a restaurant, grocery store, at work, etc.

Shopping -   Use the handy-wipes near the carts of any store if available or carry a pack on you to wipe down the cart handle before shopping.  Always use hand sanitizer after using the check out credit card machine.

Cell Phone – Disinfect your cell phone at least once a week to keep the germs down and more often when we are in flu season like now. Cell phones are warm and a breeding ground for bacteria. Use on of your handy wipes to disinfect. Do not spray anything directly onto your phone or you could risk damaging your phone.

At Work -  Wipe down your phone, desk, chair, keyboard, mouse and anything else that you use even if you are the only one.

Drink plenty of water. Not everyone is a fan of water, but it is so good for dehydration. Coffee, tea and soda’s contribute to dehydration.
