Keep It Clean – When It Comes To A Job Promotion

by

A survey at CareerBuilder.com of more then 2600 hiring personnel said that along with hard work and dedication, a neat work area is just as vital. Twenty eight percent of those in the survey admitted this would give someone a promotion that is neat over messy.

Neatness reflects organization a key to making your job go smoother, shows you care and are more likely on top of your tasks.

Here are some tips to help you de-clutter and stay organized.

Organize with an Inbox and Outbox Tray on your desk.

Inbox – Things to get done. This is a great way to organize your tasks. Organize your inbox according to importance of task to be done and in what time frame. If you have a report due a couple hours after you start your day then pile your papers accordingly so that everything is at your fingertips. Once one task is completed and the other needs to be started.

Outbox Thing ready to go. Once a task is completed, move it to the OutBox for delivery to another department or to be filed.

Files On Hand
Keep file folders and lables in a desk draw so you can easily fill the folder, label and put into your outbox to file.

No Posting Here
While post-it notes are a great way to remind yourself of things to do, save them for your fridge or reminder board at home. Instead keep a notebook handy for daily reminders and check it off through out your day.

No Food or Drink
Eating at your desk is a habit all of us fall into. Meeting a deadline or finishing a project, it is easier to grab a sandwich, chips or anything we can just gobble down while we work. Result is that crumbs fall in the keyboard making a mess or food that has gone cold from focusing on the task more then your lunch or snack. Take a break from your work, take time to eat and leave the containers in the trash not on your desk.

This is my Family
Family photos are wonderful can open easy conversation with client or other employees. Consider keeping only a few pictures and maybe changing them up every once and a while, to avoid to much clutter.

Pens in Place
Fumbling for a pen that works? Take time to replace old pens, pencils and marker. Throw away those that don’t work and display only the ones you need. Keep them in a nice container on your desk.

Dust Off Daily
Keep a spare cloth or paper towels to wipe down your computer and monitor everyday. With the touch screens, make sure the monitor is free of finger prints. Once a week grab a lint free cloth and some alcohol and wipe down the keyboard using just a dab of alcohol. Do this especially if other people use your computer to help fight off germs from the common cold and more.

Is there a Desk Under There?
If you cannot see your desk, you have too much clutter. Take time to have everything you work with have a place that is not piled on top of your desk. If you are organized your job will become much easier and less stressful. At the end of your day, empty the trash and shred papers no longer needed. Leave your work area neat and ready for the next day.

Don’t Flub That Job Interview!

by

We all get nervous going to a job interview and being prepared can help ease that. You can pick out your outfit the night before, but that is the easy part. Learning as much as you can about the company and what is needed for the job offer can give you an advantage on the next person interviewing.
Here are a few tips that impressed me when I was hiring for a company.

Lombardi Time Arrival
Lombardi Time is phrase coined after Vince Lombardi, the famous and beloved Green Bay Packers coach. It means that you should show up 10-15 minutes early, or you will be considered late. When you arrive 15 minutes early it not only shows responsibility and interest but also in many businesses good manners. On time is better then late and having to open your interview with an excuse. First impressions matter, make yours work on arrival.

Hey I’m Over Here
Keep eye contact with the interviewer. If you feel uncomfortable, focus on looking between their eyes or just above their eyebrows. This shows them your interested and they have your attention. Don’t look at the ground, it shows lack of confidence.

Don’t I sound Enthused?
Enthusiasm goes along way with the conversation. If your on board and show interest in a positive way the person interviewing you will be more likely to want to talk to you more and allow you to give more information about yourself.

Do Not Go Empty Headed
Prepare, Prepare, Prepare! You know what your capable of and now is your time to shine. Study up on what the company is looking for and let them know what you can do and how you can contribute to the company. Have a short list of questions for the interviewer as well. Taking out a pad of paper with your questions, shows you think ahead and want to do all you can do fill the position.

Do your homework and eat before the interview, grumbling stomachs make for awkwardness.

Beware: Been on an On Line Job Search Lately?

by

The Internet has been making searching jobs much easier over the past few years and many people do just that to look for employment. Especially now with fuel prices up and not going to far down when they do, it makes sense, start from home and gather in your prospects on line. Be careful though, you are not the only one looking for prospects..

When you are searching online leaving your resume on job boards you may be opening yourself to ID theft unless you know what to look for. Bad enough if you are looking for a job right now with unemployment high, but who wants the stress of ID theft and having to deal with that.

Here are some things to look for so you can protect yourself:

We have a Problem with your account click here!
You receive an email or a text stating that there is a problem with the job hunting account you signed up for at and you need to enter your information again. At reputable sites, you should have a message section on the site itself, check there to see if the company has sent you the same message there. If not clicking on that email will not go to a reputable lead for a job but to a scammer who is really saying in that link they provided, Click Here fool, I am about to steal your identity.

Give up your Social Security Number and Hey your bank account too please.
If you find a job site that requires you to put in a social security or bank account number, or get an email that says this information is needed, get out of there fast. Until you have been interviewed face to face and landed the job for sure, you should not give out this information. You social security once hired would be used for tax purposes and your bank account for direct deposit of paychecks.

Poor Spelling:
If you are looking for a job that is supposed to be based in the US and there is jut poor spelling or if the language is off, remember in another country English may not be the employers first language it often shows in email address, job descriptions, etc. Do some research to make sure they are legitimate.

Money Upfront
They want money up front. What for you ask? There are some companies that may require to buy a kit of some sort to sell their products, always ask around and do research on these products without the hype that goes along with them to make sure you are not throwing good hard earned money out the window.

You Can Make $5,000 a week take home!
The offer you have received is outrageous and the benefits are over the top, old saying that still stands, “If it sounds too good to be true it is”…

Jobs are not easy to get these days, but be careful and take the time to read all the fine print and if you are unsure about a company contact the BBB.com Better Business Bureau for more information on any company you plan to work for.
