Ladies Night In – Throw a Fun Poker Party

by

Plan a Poker Party with just the ladies and make it a fun night even for beginners. Good food, friends and fun are what is in store with one of America’s favorite and easiest poker games, Texas Hold’em. Here are some tips to make it a great event.

The Week Before:
Send out invites by email, text or call up your girlfriends and get an RSVP so you know how many to set up for. Texas Hold’em is best played at tables of 6-9 people. Let your guests know if you are going to bet with just chips for fun, coupons, nickels and dimes etc. so they can be prepared upon arrival.

Theme your party like a casino.
Red and Black are popular colors and just a few candles can help with that. You could also use red and black plates, napkins and utensils, the colors match the cards.

If you are using chips, take out a color you will not be using in the game and scatter them among the food for a festive and colorful addition to your serving table.

A green felt tablecloth or cover at the game table will not only give it the casino feel it also keeps your table from getting scratched, keeps watermarks from drinks away and helps the cards stay put.

Setting Up
Pick a table where everyone can sit comfortably and not see each others cards. You can use your dining table or coffee table if you have more guest.

Atmosphere and Music
Any party with music is just that much better. Bring in the casino atmosphere with songs like:
Texas Hold’em by David Cline
The Gambler by Kenny Rogers
Casino Royale Soundtrack

Good Eats
Leave out the greasy finger foods and bring on bite size sandwiches, kebobs with fruit or cheese and deli meats and olives. Also a good idea is to have a cheese platter or veggie platter on hand. Keep plenty of napkins on hand since your guest will also be handling the cards. Little cakes or cookies would be great for dessert.

For drinks you can serve alcohol or non alcohol or both. Put a punch together if are expecting a larger crowd to make it easier on you.

Review the Rules:
Make sure you know what the rules are and how to play the game. If you do have some beginners, maybe play the first couple of hands for fun so they can catch on. You can even print out a cheat sheet for each guest so they can refer to it during the game. You can get that Right Here!

Please check with your county on rules of gambling in your home town.

How To Organize a Delicious Foodie Book Club

by

If your a foodie as I am, you love anything to do with food, recipes, cooking and eating delicious meals. There are many books on the market, memoirs, mysteries, humor and novels to name a few that are geared toward food lovers. A love for food, reading and great conversation can be shared with friends and family with your book club.

Get your book club going easily with these tips:

Get your Group together:

Contact family members, co-workers, friends and ask if they are interested. I am sure you know of a few people off the top of your head that like to read or cook, they should go at the top of your list. Invite at least 7-10 people to start.

First Meeting:

Your first meeting should be about picking a book everyone will enjoy. (See book ideas at bottom of page). Have a list of at least 3 books available to choose from as too many books could get overwhelming. Organize what day and time of the month is good for everyone for your first book review meeting. Let your friends know that you will be rotating meetings at each others homes and will put a list together along the way as well as more books to choose from. Serve cookies, drinks, something light at this meeting and it should only be about up to an hour long.

Book Review Meeting

Have the first book review meeting at your home. Since your are the creator of this group, you should host. This is also a good way for your friends to see how you do it and be able to feel more comfortable for the next meeting if it is in their home. Send out a reminder of the day and time of the meeting a couple days ahead, and ask if anyone will not be able to attend. You will be serving food that is themed to the book, so getting a head count will help know how much to make. Arrange your furniture for conversation or set a table big enough to hold everyone.

Set aside at least 15 – 20 minutes of this meeting for everyone to socialize a bit and then start to focus on the book. Explore the characters, the authors recipes, favorite parts of the book etc. The meeting should last about an hour and a half and you can serve the food as you are starting the review or after.

Theme your Dishes

Theme your dishes for the meeting to the book your reading. Try pulling out a recipe from the book and bring it to life at your meeting. If you cannot make the recipe, see if one of your members would like to give it a try. Most of the recipes in these books, are easy to follow and make. No time to cook? Visit your local bakery, deli or hold your meeting at a restaurant geared toward that dish.

Your goal should be to have fun, enjoy good food and friends.

Is Texting and Driving in Florida Legal?

by

Repost from Budget Bi Rite Insurance

There are enough distractions on the road without adding in talking on the phone or worse texting someone. Why not just glue a laptop to your steering wheel and put on a headset and forget driving, pretend you are in your office.

Have you ever experienced the following..
Someone rolling through a stop sign talking on the phone and not aware of what they just did?

Riding too close to you with a cigarette in one hand and cell phone in the other? Look Mom no hands!

Talking at a stop light with the window down like they were comfy cozy on their living room couch not caring who heard what they had to say.

Its bad enough to talk on the cell phone while driving, but to actually keep looking at cell phone key pad to text a message is beyond thinking. One of the biggest causes for accidents is distractions while driving.

How about driving with not only the kids yelling, laughing and carrying on with a mom looking overwhelmed, but in the conversation on the phone with the occasional yell at the kids, “quite down I am on the phone”, should not be going on and quite frankly putting her and their lives in jeopardy on the road.

I am sure their are occasions running through your head at this moment of incidences you did not like to see on the road and maybe that made you pull over or get far behind someone not paying attention to the road.

It’s simple: Do Not Text or Talk on the Phone while driving. What do we tell our kids when they reach that wonderful age of driving? It’s a privilege not a right. In Florida you can get a traffic ticket for being a distracted driver and worse cause an accident.

If you must answer a call, get a hands free phone. If you must text, pull over.

Here are some guidelines from the Florida Highway Patrol for Cell Phone Tips while driving. http://www.flhsmv.gov/fhp/html/cellphone.html

Letter to My Wife – Email Gone Wrong

by

A Minneapolis couple decided to go to Florida to thaw out during a particularly icy winter. They planned to stay at the same hotel where they spent their honeymoon 20 years earlier.
Because of hectic schedules, it was difficult to coordinate their travel schedules, so the husband left Minnesota and flew to Florida on Thursday, with his wife flying down the following day.

The husband checked into the hotel. There was a computer in his room, so he decided to send an email to his wife. However, he accidentally left out one letter in her email address, and without realizing his error, sent the email.

Meanwhile, somewhere in Houston, a widow had just returned home from her husband’s funeral. He was a minister who was called home to glory following a heart attack. The widow decided to check her email expecting messages from relatives and friends. After reading the first message, she screamed and fainted. The widow’s son rushed into the
room, found his mother on the floor, and saw the computer screen which read:

To: My Loving Wife
Subject: I’ve Arrived
Date: October 16, 2004

I know you’re surprised to hear from me. They have computers here now and you are allowed to send emails to your loved ones. I’ve just arrived and have been checked in. I see that everything has been prepared for your arrival tomorrow. Looking forward to seeing you then! Hope your journey is as uneventful as mine was.

P.S. Sure is freaking hot down here.
